The formula is 110 lbs of Asphaltic concrete per COMPACTED Square yard, one inch thick; then 200 lbs per ton

length x width - divide by 9 gets you square yards. multiply the square yards x .17 for tons @ 3" thick. works every time!

I need to put 3in of asphalt on my 23"x28" driveway , by your formula it is around 12tons, but my husband is saying that we need only 6 tons , please let me know who is right? thanks.

I'm sure you mean 23' x 28'. In inches, it would be the size of a patio stone. You need about 6 cubic yards or 12 tons.

1 yd = 3 ft = 36 in, so
(23/3) x (28/3) x (3/36) = 6 ydł, it is about 2 ton/ydł, so 12 ton.
