Liters to pounds

I would like to know how many liters are in 5 pounds. I need a container that holds 5 pounds and the containers are 5 liters and 8.5 liters. How do you convert that to pounds?

Re: Liters to pounds

What is the substance? It will depend on the density of the substance.

Water has a density of 1 kilogram per liter.

5 liters = 5 kilograms = 11 pounds
8.5 liters = 8.5 kilograms = 18.7 pounds

Substances other than water will differ.

Most cooking oil is around 0.9 kg/L (different types of oil might range 0.88 - 0.92 kg/L), so

1 L x 0.9 kg/L x 1lb/0.4536 kg = 1.98 lb, call it 2 lb.

The density of propane is about 0.51 kg/L, so 125 L is 63.75 kg.
63.75 kg x 1 lb/0.45359 kg = 140.5 lb

Densities of lubricants can vary just like any othe petroleum product. However, 10 L is probably between 8.5 - 9 kg.
