Need help sq ft to tons
I would like someone to help me find out how to go from square feet to number of tons needed: For example my driveway is 18 x 63 feet = 1134 sq ft. My driveway needs to have 4" of asphalt. How may tons will that require?

Re: Need help sq ft to tons
You can calculate volume using one of the following formulas:
volume = length * width * height volume = area * height though both need to be in the same base unit, so convert inches to feet first. 1134 square feet * (4 inches / 12) feet = 378 cubic feet Now to convert volume such as cubic feet to weight such as tons, it depends on the density of the substance. If you let me know the substance I may be able to look up the density. For example, sand would have a different conversion than gravel.

Re: Need help sq ft to tons
Crushed asphalt is 45 pounds/cubic foot
378 cubic foot * 45 pounds/cubic foot = 17010 pounds 17010 pounds / 2000 = 8.5 tons

[My parking lot is 6,500 sq. ft. 1 1/2 inches thick of asphalt How any tons are required?

Re: Need help sq ft to tons
6500 square foot * (1.5 inches / 12) foot = 812.5 cubic foot
812.5 cubic foot * 45 pounds/cubic foot = 36562.5 pounds 36562.5 pounds / 2000 = 18.28 tons

Re: Need help sq ft to tons
Hi, square feet is an area, which doesn't have any weight. To work out what weight you need or have, you need two more parameters. You need the depth of the area you are interested in, and you need the density of the substance you want to remove (or fill it with).
Density is the weight for volume of a particular material. As you can see from the above posts, crushed ashphalt is 45 pounds per cubic foot. This means if you have a box of ashpahlt which is 12" x 12" x 12", then the ashphalt will weigh 45 pounds. A cubic foot of a different material will probably weigh a different amount. To answer your question, work out how many cubic feet you need, then work out how much that many cubic feet will weigh.
