Re: Cubic Meter to Square meter

I need to convert 1 cubic metre to the equivalent in square metres. Pine bark is sold bulk in cubic metres. But if you buy by the bag, a 70 litre bag apparently covers 5 square metres of soil if layed at a thickness of 75 to 100mm. Thanks.

70 L = 0.07 m³. If you are covering 5 m², I would expect it to only cover 0.07 m³/5 m² = 0.014 m (14 mm). The exception would be if it is highly compressed in the bag and "fluffs up" when removed. I don't think pine bark does that. However, bales of peat moss are compressed and the material expands when removed.

For any shape area with vertical sides, volume = area x height. You can re-arrange to solve for any of the three, given the other two.

Depends on the thickness, which needs to be expressed in meters.
Divide the volume 0.1 m³ by the thickness to determine area in square meters which will be covered. Then divde the £10.01 price by that area to get price per square meter. (meter = metre, it is just US/UK spelling difference)

Then divide by the thickness (in meters) to determine the area that will be covered at that thickness. It only works if the thickness is uniform.
