ug/kg, ug/L to ppm

Does 1,000 ug/kg = 1 ppm? How many parts ppm is 1,800 ug/L?
Does 1,800 ug/L = 1.8ppm? Thank You!

Re: ug/kg, ug/L to ppm

ppm stands for parts per million. There is 1000g in a kg, 1,000,000mg in a kg, and 1,000,000,000ug in a kg.

1000ug/kg is therefore 1ppm

1800ug/L is 1.8ppm.

If you are talking about volumes, 1000mL = 1L, 1,000,000uL = 1L, so 1uL/L = 1ppm. - this is particularly important with gases.

Thanks! So does 53,000 ug/kg = 53ppm? Is water 1,800 ug/L = 1.8 ppm? Very Appreciative

Re: ug/kg, ug/L to ppm -- and to percent %

thank you for the info to convert ug/kg to ppm

if 1000 ug/kg = 1ppm, then 50ug/kg = 0.05ppm,...correct?

what is 0.05ppm expressed as a percent?
can you show me the equation? for the lay reader like me?

thank you

the equation is 0.05/1,000,000 x 100 = 5e-6%

For problems such as this, you can always relate it to what "100%" MEANS.

A pure substance is 1,000,000ppm.

Divide by 10000 to convert ppm to percent, so
0.18% and 0.35%.

Micrograms and kilograms differ by 10^9, so if ppm by weight is what you want, 221 µg/kg = 221 ppb w/w

Parts per million (or billion) can also be ratios of volumes or moles.
