I think you meant to use the term linear, referring to a straight line. The term lineal refers to a line of ancestry, such as your family tree.

That depends somewhat on what you are trying to do.

In most cases such as for boards and carpet rolls, linear footage is just the length of the object.

square feet / width in feet = linear feet

In cases such as painting a room or fencing an area, what you want is the perimeter of the area.

assuming a rectangular area:
(length * 2) + (width * 2) = linear feet of fencing needed.

If you provide more detail of exactly what you are trying to do, we could fine tune the conversion for you.

You would need 500 linear feet.

Linear distance just does not take the height of the fence into account.

You would need to know the length and width.

(length * 2) + (width * 2) = linear feet of fencing needed.

We have a 12x16 deck which I believe is 192 SQ FT. We are looking to buy trex decking which is listed as starting at $1.99 LF. So what would that come out to and how do you convert square feet into lf (what does that stand for) leneal feet?

That depends on the width of the decking boards.

square feet / width of boards in feet = linear feet

Usually the boards are listed in inches, so convert inches to feet first.

You would need to know the width of the boards used.
