248 inches * 168 inches = 41664 square inches
41664 square inches / 144 = 289.3 square feet
why we devided by 144

18 " x 0.0254 m/inch = 0.4572 m
36" x 0.254 m/in = 0.9144 m
Area = 0.418 m² (just multiply)

It is easier to start by measuring in meters.

Unhappy Re: Inches to Square foot

I have a total of 18 pieces of material (6) 1"x3"; (8) - 2"x3" and (4) 4"x20"

How do I calculate the total inches for each specific size, and how do I convert the total amount of inches into sq ft?

Multiply number of pieces x dimensions and add, eg
6 pcs x 1" x 3" = 18 in²

Total is 386 in²

1 ft² = 144 in² (12 x 12) so divide by 144 for sq ft., 2.7 ft²
This is the minimum required. Based on width of fabric, you have to layout the least wasteful way to cut these from a piece of fabric.
