Cubic Yards into Square feet

I need to convert Cubic Yards into square feet at varying depths. For the sake of this example, lets use 456 cubic yards a 1 foot deep. Thank you!

1) Multiply by 27 ft³/yd³ to convert to cubic feet; you have 12312 ft³

2) Divide by the depth to detrmine the square feet covered. 1 ft depth gives 12312. HOWEVER, the dirt, sand or stone is delivered loose and will compact down. Typical is around 15%, so I would first multiply the figure from step 1 by 0.85. Re-compacted, you will only fill about a 10465 ft³ hole.

This 85% figure may vary a little for different fill materials, but it is a pretty good number to start with

Thanks! Very helpful. I am actually just trying to make a comparison of the amount of landfill waste that my company produces to show how many sq ft or acers it could cover. This is perfect!
