There are 1.6 kilometers/mile

minutes/mile / 1.6 kilometers/mile = minutes/kilometer

8 / 1.6 = 5 minutes/kilometer

if i have been on a tread mill for 471 minutes how many kilomeres is that

The maths here is incomplete. Example: converting a pace of (for example) 9 minutes and 57 seconds per mile:

9.57 / 1.6 = 5.98...

Which is not so useful.

May I suggest the following procedure (particularly useful if you are going to do this in a spreadsheet for tracking, say, running training):

1. Note that a more accurate conversion factor is 1.60934
2. Convert your pace in minutes & seconds to a pace in seconds
3. Divide the pace in seconds by the factor
4. Convert your pace in seconds back into minutes and seconds

Using the 9'57" pace given above, then:

(9*60)+57 = 597
597 / 1.60934 = 370.95952
370.95952 / 60 = 6.18265

Hence, approximate pace is 6 minutes and 18 seconds per kilometer.

I agree with most of your comments, but there is a problem in the final step. The answer is 6.18265 minutes, but that is NOT the same 6 minutes 18 seconds.

Note that 6 minutes is 360 s, subtract from 370.95952, and note the actual residual is about 10.96 s, ie correct answer is 00:06:10.96/km.

The conversion factor you gave is more than accurate enough on a calculator, but if automating on a computer, note that 1.609344 km/mile is exact.

I rode my bike (around our neighborhood) at a moderate pace for 25.42 min and I need to convert to miles. Our school is tracking our miles.
