how to calculate fabric GSM

gsm stands for "grams per square meter". It is the weight of a single layer of fabric that is square, and measures 1m x 1m.

If you have the weight in oz/square yard, just convert them using the conversion pages for weight and area on the home pages on this website. (It is not obvious to me what units your original measurements are in sorry).

They are some kind of specification of the thread and the weave, but I don't know how to interpret it. After the fact, I agree with you, "just weigh it." Before the fact, it is nice to be able to predict the weight from a thread and weaving spec, but I don't know how to do it.

The question has been asked before, and some people who have replied seem familiar with weaving, but I don't know enough about it to judge the correctness of their answers.

10 cm = 0.1 m so the area of your swatch is 0.01 m²
1.48 g/0.01 m² = 148 g/m² (also written gsm)
