In the U.S., 1 yard of fabric equals 1 linear yard of fabric from a standard sized roll. 1 yard from a 42" roll will have a different area than 1 yard from a 54" roll.

I am not aware of how this is done concerning metric units, but since metric is a bit more precise a meter of fabric may likely mean square meter. If so you'd need to take the width of the roll into account.

When you are buying dress making fabric or carpet or vinyl floor coverings in metric, it is always sold by the linear meter (In nz at least).

The only floor stuff that is sold by the square meter is tiles, which seem to be about 11 per m???

In what units? 1 yd = 3 ft = 36 in, so
2/7 yd = 0.286 yd = 0.857 ft = 10.3 in = 26.1 cm

You would need the width of the fabric and also the weight of the fabric in grams per square meter (gsm). The length alone is insufficient information.

However, you could just put it on a scale.
