Default Lost in Landscape?

Hello Everyone,
I am studying for an nursery exam and understand the whole cubic yard to cubic feet conversion. What has me scratching is how do you get 324 sq ft of mulch out of a cubic yard. I have looked, asked co-workers. Is there a formula.
Please help before my brain explodes.

I reverse engineered it
27 ft³/324 ft² = 0.08333 ft (1/12 ft)
That of course is 1 inch.
324 ft² x 1 in x 1 ft/12 in = 27 ft³
