Smile grams to yards...yarn

Hi...I am using a triple beam scale to weight 3 yards of yarn. In this example the 3 yards = .15 grams. How many yards are in 49.6 grams of the same yarn? My math came up with 992 yds. Is this correct?

Yes. 49.6 g x 3 yd/0.15 g = 992 yd

You are near the precision limit of your scale though. If the weight varied 0.01 g, the answer would vary from 930 - 1063 yd, so don't assume excessive precision here.

Thank you so much for the reply...and the information on how precise the scale may be. Can you think of a better way to figure out the yardage...should I measure a longer piece, or would that not help?

If the sample is 10X longer (and heavier), the uncertainty would be reduced to 1/10 the above. The only issue is once it's cut, can you use the sample for something. Eventually, it becomes long enough that you don't want to waste it.
