  • Percent concentration to mg/ml?

    I'm preparing to teach a class in local anesthesia to dental hygienists.
    For the life of me I can't seem to understand % concentration.

    The textbook says that a 2% solution of lidocaine is equal to 20mg/ml.
    A 3% solution is equal to 30mg/ml and so on.

    I don't understand how they come up with 20.
    1ml must equal a thousand of something!

    I think it's based on the idealized assumption of 1000 mg/mL (that is, both the solvent and solute have densities similar to water). 20/1000 = 2%.

    I'm sure someone else could provide a better answer.

      % concentration is based on g/100mL.

      a 2% solution is 2g/100mL, or 2000mg/100mL. This reduces to 20mg/mL.

        Re: Percent concentration to mg/ml?

        in this case % concentration is based on g/ml

        a 2% solution is: (1ml x 2%)/100 = 0,02g/ml
        0,02g/ml x 1000 = 20mg/ml (becouse 1g = 1000mg)

          Re: Percent concentration to mg/ml?

          It s simple,,,,
          2 % solution means,,,,,,2 gm in 100 ml
          so it means,,,,,2x1000 mg in 100 ml
          means 20 mg/ml

              Re: Percent concentration to mg/ml?

              The basic formula to obtain the required ml of solvent or mg of solute for any % of solution needed is "mg/ml=%X10". using this formula, to make 2% lignocaine solution,

              mg= % X 10 X ml.
              mg= 2 x 10 x 1
              mg= 20

              i.e 20 mg per ml gives 2% solution
              i.e 200 mg per 10 ml gives 2% solution
              i.e 2000 mg (2g) per 100ml gives 2% solution

                I agree, pharmacist_in_training is right.

                So if you have 1 carpule of 1.7 mL of 2% Lidocaine, you have ( 1.7 mL x 20 mg/mL) 34 mg of Lidocaine in that carpule.

                    Re: Percent concentration to mg/ml?

                    let's say that we have 15% solution and we want to convert it to mg/ml:-

                    15% means 15 gm/100 ml=15000 mg/ 100 ml= 150 mg /ml

                      Re: Percent concentration to mg/ml?

                      IF you see something that has a concentration of 2.0%, and easy way to convert this to milligrams is to move the decimal one place to the right. So 2.0% equates to 20mg/ml or 4.0% would be 40mg/ml.

                          one fourth is 0.25, whether grams or something else. 0.2 is one fifth (1/5).

                            Re: Percent concentration to mg/ml?

                            1mg/1ml = 1000ppm
                            1 % = 1000mg/100ml
                            therefore 1% = 10 mg/ml
                            2 % = 20mg/ml
                            and so on

                            i think this will help u. if any doubt send me a mail on [email protected].

                            thanks/regards
