I am trying to calculate how many tons of sand I need and I don't know how to do it. I know that I need 11,900 cu ft of sand. Does anyone know how to convert cu ft of sand to tons?
Thanks. |

Quote:
Get the weight of one cubic foot of the sand and multiply it by 11,900. Then divide by 2000. Dry sand weighs about 100 lbs. per cubic foot. This will vary with different types of sand so: 11,900 x 100 = 1,190,000 lbs. Divided by 2000 = 595 Tons

Here are some more densities if you want to fine tune the conversion.
Sand, wet - 120 pounds/cubic foot Sand, wet, packed - 130 pounds/cubic foot Sand, dry - 100 pounds/cubic foot Sand, loose - 90 pounds/cubic foot Sand, rammed - 105 pounds/cubic foot Sand, water filled - 120 pounds/cubic foot |

For example, you might be lining it with concrete and using it as a drainage culvert to carry water somewhere. On the other hand, you might be installing porous pipe and crushed rock to drain the land it runs through. If you have some concept of the design, we may be able to help with details. PS: It is rather deep and narrow. Such dirtworks are dangerous and prone to collapse without proper support. You may need engineering advice from someone onsite who can actually see it, and design a proper solution. |
