There are 12 inches in a foot
there are 3 feet to a yard
there are 36 inches in a yard
there are 36 x 36 = 1296 square inches in a square yard
there are 3 x 3 feet = 9 square feet in a square yard

if you are working with feet and inches, it is best to convert the feet to inches until your final calculations, it's just easier that way.
I usually will work out a problem both ways as a way to double check my work. It's just that in the working world mistakes can cost a lot of money.

I work for a concrete and asphalt company and here at work we calculate length x width = square feet.

We then divide by 9 to calculate the square yards.

So, for example:

29'5" x 20' = 590 square feet

590sf / 9 = 65.56 square yards.

To convert square yards to cubic yards (in case you need to know this):

Take your total amount of square yards (65.56sy) x 9 (sq ft in a yard) x depth (4" sidewalk or 6" driveway or 8" street, etc) then divide by 324 = cubic yards

So, 65.56 sy x 9 x 6" (driveway) = 16.39 cubic yards of concrete needed.

You would need to know the length and width.
I guess that was what you were really asking.

length x width = square area

By using Sandra's info above, you now know that there are 9 sq ft in 1 sq yd.

So, now all you have to do is just divide your total amount of square feet by 9 to get your answer of total square yards.

For example:

75'6" / 9 = 8.4 sq yds

12 feet / 9 = 1.33 sq yds

47' 3 " / 9 = 5.25 sq yds

100 feet / = 11.11 sq yds

One of my favorite math teachers said that math isn't learned from a book but actually from the point of a sharp pencil.

You will find that you learn more just by playing with the numbers. If we give you all the answers it won't help next time you have to do a similar problem.

So 12 ft 5 in = 12/3 + 5/36 yd = 4.1389 yd
8 ft 8 in = 8/3 + 8/36 yd = 2.8889 yd
The area is the product, 11.96 yd²
