How much area is one Bigha (used in India) in square foot? I couldn't find this unit in the area section of this site.

TIA

There seem to be many different definitions for it, depending on the area. That is usually the problem with all traditional units.

Generally in India it is defined as 0.4 hectare.

In Bangladesh and in West Bengal it was standardized under British rule at exactly 1600 square yards.

In central India it is defined as 3025 square yards.

In Nepal it is definded as 0.677 hectare

Thanks for the response. The place I found it was referring to the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh (northern India) in case you would happen to know how it is defined over there.

That's tough decision.

It's close to Nepal so may be using that definition, but in India so may be using that definition. So probably, but not sure, it would be between 0.4 and 0.677 hectare. Not a very definitive answer for you.

I will try emailing a university in India and see if they can provide information. The last time I emailed a question they did respond, just took nearly 3 weeks.

Nothing back from the university. I found a couple more definitions.

In Rajastan, India, a Bigha equals 2500 square meters. In Bangal, India, a Bigha equals 1333.33 square meters.

The only thing I can say for sure is 1 Bigha = 20 Kattha = 13 Ropani, just all definitions converting to metric seem to differ.

The bigha varies in size from region to another; in India it is generally less than an acre (0.4 hectare).
In Bengal (both in Bangladesh and in West Bengal, India) the bigha was standardized under British colonial rule (0.1338 hectare or 0.3306 acre); this is often interpreted as being 1/3 acre.
In central India bighas were standardized at 3025 square yards or 5/8 acre (0.2529 hectare).

Square Measure 1 square foot = 0.093 square metre
1 square yard = 0.836 square metre
1 square mile = 2.59 square kilometre*= 259 hectares
1 acre = 0.405 hectares
1 Acre = 4 Bigha 16 Biswa (4840 Sq.Yds)
1 Bigha = 20 Biswas (1008 Sq.Yds)
1 Biswa = 150 Sq.Yards <-- if 1 biswa is 150 sq yard bigha has 20 biswa then 1 acre has 1.7 bigha .

The Bigah as a unit of measure appears to be different in different parts inside and outside India. In the Mountain regions (particularly in Uttra Khand - Dehra Dun area) the most common understanding of the bigah is that it represents 900 Sq Yards, and approximately 5 bigahs equal 1 acre.

Thanks for the response. The place I found it was referring to the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh (northern India) in case you would happen to know how it is defined over there.

Hi,

In Himachal Pradesh, India :
20 Square Karams = 1 Biswa
20 Biswa = 1 Bigha

1 Square Karam = 4'9" X 4'9"
Hence,
1 Bigha = 4'9" X 4'9" X 20 X 20 = 9025 Sq. Ft.
Therefore 4.826592797783933518005540166205 Bighas = 1 Acre [1 Acre = 660 Ft. X 66 Ft. = 43,560 Sq. FT.]
OR 1 Bigha = 838.449936 Sq. M.

1 Bigha = 5 Kotha

(1 Kotha = 20 Lessa
Again, 1 Lessa = 144 sq feet)

Therefore,
1 Bigha = 5 Kotha = 100 Lessa = 14400 square feet

Now,
1 Hectare = 10,000 sq mtr = 107642.63 sq feet

So,
1 Hectare = 107642.63/14400 Bigha = 7.475 Bigha

It depends from place to place.
Mostly the conversion is 1 Bigha=40/121 acre (British convention) . This is the one that is used generally in Assam , West Bengal , Bangladesh etc.

If you look through the rest of the thread, you will find that the bigha is a traditional measurement, with differing meanings in different regions. - You will have to find a legal description of what you are looking at, and work from there.

In India, the following 2 measurements for "Bigha" are in use:

1) In Western India, in places like Rajasthan,
1 Bigha = 1620.43 sq. m, i.e., 0.16 Ha

2) In Eastern India, in places like West Bengal,
1 Bigha = 2531.92 sq.m, i.e, 0.25 Ha

Yeah, it is confusing no doubt, but that's how it is here. This unit is used mainly in the villages for local usage and you cannot enforce anyone to forget whatever he has been following for generations. Actually they may be two words with different meanings sounding roughly the same. As an example, the word 'Ghanta' in most Indian languages mean an hour, but in some it means a clock or a watch. So, you see?

Uses in India

Bigha is a traditional unit of land in several parts of India, with land purchases still being undertaken in this unit. However, it varies in size from one part of India to another. It is less than an acre (0.4 hectare), however could extend up to 3 acres. Various states and often parts within states have different sizes attributed to 1 Bigha.

In Assam, India, a Bigha is 14,400 square feet. It is subdivided into 5 Kotha. Each Kotha consists of 20 Lecha. Each Lecha is 144 square feet in area, and hence each Kotha is 2880 sq ft in area.(may varies)

In Bihar, different parts use different sizes for Bigha. Near the capital, Patna, 1 Bigha is equivalent to 20 Kattha each worth 1361 Sq. Feet. Furthermore, One Kattha are subdivided in 20 Dhur. Hence, each Dhur is approximnately 68.06 Sq. Feet.
Further, in some of the eastern parts of the state including Munger,Bhagalpur and Jamui, One Dhur is further subdivided into 1 square lagga(pole length). One lagga is equivalent to 5.5 hand length, with each hand length being 18 inch.

In Himachal Pradesh, India, 5 Bighas is equal to 1 Acre.
in punjab ,india, 4 bigha is equal to 1 acre.according to mr pankaj dhir.0035797763568

0035796397613,0035799971787.

In central India, Bighas were standardized at 3025 square yards or 5/8 acre (0.2529 hectare).

In Madhya Pradesh, India, 1 Kattha = 600 Sq Feet.

In Uttar Pradesh 1 Bigha is divided in 20 Biswas. Each Biswas is 125 Sq.Mts or 154.32 Sq. Yds Hence, One Bigha is 0.25 Hectare (or 2500 Sq.Mts or 3087.41 Sq.Yds).While in Uttar Pradesh (West) the measurements are slightly differ 1 Bigha=20 Bishwa=60 Decimal=2428.80 Sq. Mtrs
In Uttarakhand, 1 Bigha is subdivided into 19 Bissas or 12 Nali. In Imperial and SI Units, each Bigha is 968 sq. yard or 800 sq.mt.

In West Bengal, the bigha was standardized under British colonial rule at 1600 square yards (0.1338 hectare or 0.3306 acre); this is often interpreted as being 1/3 acre (it is precisely 40⁄121 acre). In Metric Unites, a Bigha is hence 1333.33 mē
