It depends on the substance. Every substance will have a different weight to volume conversion factor.
If you post the substance I may be able to look up the data.

The substance I'm looking at is MTBE. It has a specific gravity of .74 g/cm3. And I need to convert 1 ton to 1 m3.
Robert Fogt
01-17-2006, 08:25 PM
It just so happens that gram/cubic centimeter is the same as tonne/cubic meter.
So something with a density of 0.74 gram/cubic centimeter you would:
tonne / 0.74 = cubic meters
cubic meters * 0.74 = tonnes

1 ton of gravel = what in qubic metres
Robert Fogt
08-25-2006, 06:23 AM
loose dry gravel has a density of about 95 pounds/cubic foot, wet is about 125 pounds/cubic foot.
1 ton = 2000 pounds
2000 pounds / 95 pounds/cubic foot = 21 cubic foot
21 cubic foot = 0.6 cubic meter

cubic meter * 2.4 = tonne
tonne / 2.4 = cubic meter
15 cubic meter * 2.4 tonne/cubic meter = 36 tonne

Here is the data.
Sand, wet - 1.92 tonne/cubic meter
Sand, wet, packed - 2.08 tonne/cubic meter
Sand, dry - 1.60 tonne/cubic meter
Sand, loose - 1.44 tonne/cubic meter
Sand, rammed - 1.68 tonne/cubic meter
Quartz sand - 1.2 tonne/cubic meter
cubic meters * x = tonne
tonne / x = cubic meters

Different substances have different conversions, but they are all based on the conversion (density or specific gravity) of water. It varies a bit with temperature, but you can assume that at room temperature, 1 ton of water occupies one cubic meter.
310 tons water = 310m³

I have just been given a value and I am not sure whether it means tonnes per cubic metre, or kilograms per cubic metre. It just says that the relative density of the fuel is such and such.

What is the density value you have? We should be able to determine what the units are based simply on the size of the number.
Often density is listed in tonnes/cubic meter or kilograms/liter. Both are equivalent.

hi how are you i just want to know the answer to my question how many tons of armor rock in every 1 cubic meter?
It depends on the size and type of rock, gradation, etc. You'll need to call a supplier with your specs for their weight/m3.
Average on weights of materials charts is around 1.6 t/m3 but large armor stone for breakwaters can reach 2.6 t/m3, as 1 rock can be over a m3.

Hi i want to convert 1 cubic meter of firewood into 1 ton (1 ton of fire wood equals to how many cubic meter of firewood) can any one help
Is this a stack of logs? You face two issues.
*Different woods have different density, as the density changes from fresh cut to dried, ready to burn. As a minimum, what wood species? Is it green or dried?
*Round logs don't stack perfectly into a cube; there is airspace. I've seen general guidance that a cord (128 ft³) contains about 80 ft³ of wood, the rest being airspace. Using this ratio, your stack of logs, for each cubic meter, would be about 0.625 m³ of wood, 0.375 m³ of air between the logs.

It will be very dependent on what is in the rubble. If it is mostly broken concrete, stone, brick, try 1.6 t/m³
If there is much wooden construction material. it will be lighter. If there is much steel (beams, rebar, etc) it will be heavier.

how can I convert Cubic Metre to metric tone of crude oil and refined petroleum (PMS, ETC)
You need to know the density which can vary over a considerable range for both crude oils and refined products. Crude oil can vary from around 0.6 to 1.2 t/m³, and, in total, the refined products can too, although individual refined products have narrower ranges.
If the density hasn't been measured, no meaningful conversion is possible.

What kind of tons, short (2000 lb), long (2240 lb) or metric (1000 kg)? What kind of gallons, Customary (3.7854 L) or Imperial, 4.546 L)? Since these terms have multiple meanings, they have NO meaning.
125 metric tons at density 0.85 t/m³ is 147 m³ per day, or 147 000 L day (thats 39900 US gallons or 32300 Imperial gallons) unless the teacher means some other kind of ton.
If they mean some other kind of ton, convert to metric tons (tonne) first.
1 short ton = 0.907 184 74 t
1 long ton = 1.016 0469 t

Mielies is maize, commonly referred to as corn. Bulk density will depend on the type (sweet, flint, etc.) and state of the maize (with the husk, on the cob, kibbled, etc.) and moisture content.
http://www.powderandbulk.com/resources/bulk_density/material_bulk_density_chart_c.htm has various density ranges but a better source, if you're in the USA, would be a USDA agricultural extension agent in your area.

You need to know the density, and I don't know where to look for it.
Based on "experience", I would say that "as delivered" the density is pretty close to the density of water -- some floats, some sinks. The density of water is 1 kg/L or 1 t/m³.
It contains a lot of water, and well-dried manure is appreciably lighter, maybe half the density or even less. However, now I am really guessing.
If you can find a good density figure, just divde mass by it to get volume. In the metric system, density measured in units of g/cm³, kg/L, and t/m³ will be numerically equal. If you find density in Imperial units, you'll have to convert.

You need to tell us 7000 t of what, as the answer will depend on the density, which will depend on the material. The answer for feathers vs lead would be VASTLY different.
Process:
1) Identify the material
2) Look up or measure the density
3) Divide mass by density to get volume
4) If the units don't match, you will need to do some conversion.

No. Probably a fair bit more, depending on what sort of sand, and how wet it is.
If you need 1m³, get them to supply that much, it will probably be closer to 1.5 - 2 tons, (maybe more) if you have to pay by the ton.

The volume of a gas is not defined unless temperature and pressure are specified. We can use ideal gas law at "normal" conditions, 101.325 kPa, 0 °C to make an estimate or use density at those conditions.
Natural gas is mostly methane, but most of the normal impurities are heavier, so average molecular weight is >16 g/mol. MW = 18 g/mol is pretty typical and yields a density at "normal" conditions of 0.8 kg/m³ ( metric tons per cubic dekameter, t/dam³)
36,658 t/(0.8 t/dam³) = about 45800 dam³.
This will vary inversely with average molecular weight. Obviously, it will also vary at different temperatures and pressures.

What are you trying to do? Having a little more information would be helpful.
The generic answer: It depends on the base material and moisture content.
For freshly processed, loose sand in a stockpile, it will be wet, so approximately 1.85 t/m3. If it's been in a stockpile for a week or so, it will still be damp and will weigh in the neighborhood of 1.7 t/m3.
Water is heavy.

*Identifying the substance and looking up density in a reference book.

The standard for commercial bushels in the US for shelled corn is 56 lb/bu. Grain actually varies, that is for a specified grain quality and moisture content; adjustments for those factors are made in commercial contracts. The standard weight varies for other grains (wheat is 60 lb).
That may be converted as
56 lb/bu x 1 bu/0.035 239 073 m³ x 0.453 592 37 kg/lb = 721 kg/m³ (0.721 t/m³)
The two conversions can be combined. For any standard bushel weight, multiply by 12.87186 for bulk density in kilograms per cubic meter. (Round sensibly, as the bushel weight won't be that precise)

Every substance has a unique density. If you have equal weights of lead and feathers, the feathers pile is MUCH bigger. For some things, you can look up the density in a reference book. For some things like a stack of wood, you can only make a rough estimate as it depends on the type of wood (bamboo vs lignum vitae) and how it is cut and stacked.
Volume and weight are two entirely different properties of a material. There is no general conversion, you have to know the density of the specific substance. If you have density in tonnes per cubic meter, divide weight in tonnes by density to get volume in cubic meters.

converting weight(tons) to cubic meter requires the specific gravity of the materials in relation to water. Different materials have different specific gravity. EXAMPLE: 1 cubic meter of water equals 1 ton of water. 1 cubic meter of oil equals 0.65 ton of oil. 1 cubic of concrete equal 2.34tons of concrete. therefore: Specific gravity of oil is 0.65 times to water, S.G. of concrete is 2.34times of water.

It depends on the type of rock crushed, and the uniformity of size more than size. For limestone or similar rock about 1.5 - 1.6 t/m³ for any of them, provided sizes are relatively uniform.
If it includes that size down to stone dust, somewhat heavier, as the dust fits in the voids.
The sand will be about 1.4 - 1.5 t/m³. Not sure about the riprap.

It will depend on two things:
*Ratio of clay, sand, gravel (heavy) vs top soil with organic conent (light)
*Moisture content.
Once dug up, it will lossen and occupy more volume, but based on the hole dimensions around 2 t/m³ wet as dug, maybe 1.6 t/m³ if it dries well before it is picked up.

It depends on the density of the substance. Lead and feathers give different answers.

I need to convert tons to cubic meters .The substance is "sand"
Dry sand, 1.4 t/m³, damp, 1.68 t/m³, wet 1.84 t/m³
Divide by whichever number applies to get cubic meters.

It depends on the substance. Every substance will have a different weight to volume conversion factor.
If you post the substance I may be able to look up the data.

They are probably all about 1.4 - 1.6 t/m³, but for higher accuracy, you need a more detailed "materials" sheet than I have, since nothing exact matches those descriptions.

Around 1.5 t/m³. It may be slightly higher, 1.6 t/m³ if there is a wide range of piece sizes (small pieces can fit in the space between bigger pieces). It can also vary somewhat depending on the type of rock that is crushed.

1m3 = 1e3m3 of gas or 1000m3 of gas (if yoru talking natural gas that's the general thing used in petroleum industry)

convert ton to cubic meter
Read post #2. Divide by density. In general, density depends on the material ( and temperature, pressure, etc). If you don't identify the material, there is no way to convert.

I need to convert 70 cubic metres of dirt & need to covert it to tons to cubic metres and I can't find that conversion anywhere. Can anyone help?
There is no fixed conversion and "dirt" covers a wide range of material with different densities. Topsoil (due to organic content is lighter than fill, and dry dirt is lighter than damp or wet. Figures may range from 1.25 t/m³ (dry topsoil)to 1.8 t/m³ or more (damp fill).
If you need any precision, weigh a sample of of known volume, otherwise guess around 1.5 t/m³, the center of the range. Note that considerable variation is possible.

Dry sand around 1.4-1.45 t/m³, so you have around 0.7 m³.

Sand ~ 1.4 t/m³, aggregate ~ 1.5-1.6 t/m³ assuming the material is dry.
If the aggregate is mixed sizes, including fines, it will fill voids and be a little heavier
