Hello,
I need to convert cubic yards to tons. If I have 583 cubic yards of soil that is a silty sand (assuming the density of the silty sand is 0.7 g/cm3), how do I calculate how many tons this will be?

Hi, easiest to convert cubic yards to cubic meters first, as g/cm^3 is the same as kg/m^3.
583cubic yards = 446m^3. The weight of 446 cubic meters of material of density 0.7 is 446 x 0.7 = 312 kg.
0.7 would be a very low density for any type of sand. Water has a density of 1.0 at 25°C, and only some of the very light metals, oils and organic solvents have densities lower than 1.0. The only other materials with low densities are things like natural or synthetic foams and fillers, which are made or formed with LOTS of air in the structure.

gram/cubic centimeter is actually 1000 kilogram/cubic meter. (its the same as kilogram/liter)
0.7 g/cm³ * 1000 = 700 kg/m³
446 m³ * 700 kg/m³ = 312,200 kg
312,200 kilogram = 344.14 U.S. ton

Yes, sorry, complete brain freeze. I meant metric tons, not kilograms. I still think 0.7 is too light a density for normal silt, though.

[QUOTE=Unregistered]Hello,
I need to convert cubic yards to tons. If I have 256 cubic yards of rock that my daughter needs to have delivered for her driveway but we need to know how many tons that will be can you help?
Robert Fogt

That depends on the type of rock.
Loose dry gravel weighs about 1.25 U.S. tons/cubic yard.
256 cubic yards * 1.25 tons/cubic yard = 320 tons
Other types of rock will differ though.

Can you provide information on what crusher run is? I will have to try and look up the density.

How much is the loose dirt weighs per cubic yard? I don't know the details about the dirt but lets assume regular dirt. Please let me know.
Thanks.

dry excavated earth weighs about 78 pounds per cubic foot.
Thats about 2106 pounds per cubic yard.

For what its worth, we use an estimate of 2900 lbs per cubic yard of dry crusher run BUT 3250 lbs per cubic yard installed with 12% swell factor.
"We" being a construction company that deals with DOT projects that use quite a bit of crusher run.

Does septic sand run about 1.5 tons per cubic yard? Or was it 1.25 tons per cubic yard?

Could you send me the conversion for different types of stone ? i.e. Ton to cu ft
I read on another site that you have this information.
Thank you

I don't have a comprehensive list. I use this:
http://www.acs-coupler.com/products/pdf/material%20density%20chart.pdf
It lists a few representative types of stone, but certainly doesn't cover every possibility.

Dry topsoil is about 1600 lb (0.8 ton) per cubic yard, so 3.2 ton. If it is damp, they are selling you a lot of water, really wet could be another ton heavier.

What's a metric yard? A cubic meter of asphalt mix is about 2.4 metric tons (tonnes).

It will vary with type of stone, but limestone is around 1.3 ton/yd³.

because most dirt isn't oven dried, i think a weight of 1.20 - 1.30 lbs/ft^3 is a better number to use.

"Dirt" has considerable variation. For fill, around 1.3 ton/yd³ dry up to about 1.5 ton/yd³ wet. Topsoil is lighter due to organic content, maybe 1.1 ton/yd³, dry.
You may wish to consider weighing a sample of known volume.
