I know that there are 43,560 square feet in an acre. How do I find out how many cubic yards are in an acre. The depth will vary, depending on the amount of dirt to be moved from that area. I know that length x width x depth divided by 27 gives cu. yards, but how do I figure this on a acre of ground? We are having a lake built and we need to know how the contractor figured the price.

You'd do these steps here:

acres * 43,560 = square feet
square feet * average depth in feet = cubic feet
cubic feet / 27 = cubic yards

In your case, you already know its 1 acre, so you could do it in this single step here:
43560 * average depth in feet / 27 = cubic yards
