For a house, I imagine you would then multiply it by the number of floors to get the total living area.

Measure it. It could be 15 x 20 m or 10 x 30 m or 5 x 40 m, or even 1 x 300 m, ANY two numbers whose product is 300. There is no way to get back to the length and width knowing only the area; you have to know one of the two at least.
